Our breath is powerful. It marks our lifespan and it is such an important part of our physiology, that as humans, we don't have to think to breathe. When we take the time to apply greater understanding to our breath and how to most fully utilize the power of our breath, it can have significant impacts on our health and well-being. Changing our breath can literally change our minds as well as our bodies. While training in YogaFit offers an understanding of the breath, this workshop integrates an East-West approach that will provide teachers with a more complete understanding of how to use and teach pranayama, in classroom, gym, and studio settings, as well as one-on-one and in therapeutic environments. This workshop is also beneficial for healthcare practitioners looking for an East-West integration of the breath and breathing techniques as well as Yoga practitioners or novices who want to find greater health through breathing.

Physiology and anatomy of breath - Anatomy and physiology of the breath from a Western and Eastern perspective-combination of discussion of physiology and the understanding of the nadis and the subtle body. Western biomedicine is now recognizing the power of the breath in disease processes and facilitating the healing process and promoting well-being.

Medical benefits - using the breath for stress reduction, reducing anxiety, decreasing asthma, complementary therapies for depression and other situations. Review of current, relevant research studies including the effect of the breath on reducing blood pressure and other physiological situations.

Patricia Hess, E-RYT-200 is a respiratory therapist as well as a YogaFit trained Yoga instructor. Felicia Marie Tomasko, RN, E-RYT-500, is a registered nurse, YogaFit trainer and Ayurvedic practitioner
